But O/A welding skill is at least 50% transferable to TIG welding. O/A kits are cheaper. You don't need anything big, you're not going to be welding 1/2" plates at the very beginning anyway, so smaller kit that gets you to be able to weld 1/8" coupons, and make a welding table with tubing will get you the basics you need to learn how to TIG.Welding is not hard. Anybody can lay a bead down. The difficulty is if you progress faster than you should. If you just started stick, don't do multi-pass bevels.. if you just started tig, don't try 18ga stainless steel. The ship building industry in Idaho isn’t going well. It's really dirty and physically difficult. Not saying dont go that route but just be prepared. Structural welding, heavy equipment manufacturing, ship building, pipeline, are physically demanding but can be less demanding depending on the company.Most/all tig welders can stick weld. Most/all mig welders can also do flux core welding. Then they make machines that cross over from tig/stick to mig/FC or sometimes even plasma cutting. IMO these sounds neater than they actually are. You'll still need the accessories and different cylinders for each process.
